Time to Meet the Natives

Rosie swallowed hard. “Now try telling me I’m hallucinating.”

“What the hell? There’s no way.” Devin muttered. “Here, hold these.” She pushed the rocket and match toward Rosie who shifted her bag onto her shoulder and clutched the rocket against her chest. Devin took off running down the beach toward the boat, grains of sand flipped from behind her feet with each step.

The scuba diver turned and plunged, disappeared under the water, taking the two spark plugs with him.

“Damn,” Devin stopped short of the water. As she walked back toward Rosie, she repeatedly glanced over her shoulder toward the boat.

“I still don’t believe it.” Her head shook side-to-side.

“How could you not believe it? You saw it with your own eyes,” Rosie said.

“Looks can be deceiving. Trust me. I’ve seen weirder things on my father’s sets. Someone is playing tricks on us.” She studied the surrounding trees. “Someone is trying to spook us.”

Rosie’s gaze followed Devin’s as they both surveyed the trees and vines that towered over them and the thick underbrush that graced the forest floor.

“They’re doing a good job. Devin, I seriously doubt if this is a Hollywood set. I think this island is haunted and we—”

A sudden look that had appeared on Devin’s face stopped her mid-sentence. Devin stood motionless, her face blank and expressionless as she stared at something behind Rosie. Slowly, Rosie twisted and looked over her shoulder to see what had caused Devin to stop in her tracks.

Behind her, high above, a doll climbed down a tree. Its tiny arms and legs moved sluggishly and methodically as it inched its way down the bark. Once in a while, it’d stop, turn its head in their direction, and smile before resuming its descent. It was dressed in a red and black checkered flannel shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. Its eyes were completely black.

The sound of something crashing through the forest caused Rosie and Devin to turn their attention in time to see a doll tumble to the ground from a branch above. It landed on its back, and wiggled in the sand, its arms and legs pointing upward, like a turtle struggling to flip over.

Rosie screeched, “Devin. They’re coming alive! Do something.”

Devin’s voice lowered, and she spoke through clenched teeth. “Coming alive my ass. They’re not alive Rosie. Someone is operating them remotely. Watch this.” She grabbed one of the oars, untied it from the blanket, and approached the fallen doll. She swung the oar and connected with the doll, sending the toy’s head flying through the air. The body, without a head, continued to struggle while the head wobbled on the beach nearby. The eyes repeatedly blinked.

Devin swung the oar again at the body and it shattered into pieces. An arm flew in one direction while a leg tumbled in another. The body, with one arm and one leg still attached, landed several feet from them. Each of the sections of the doll continued to squirm independently.

Devin ran to the torso and reached for it.
